In Japan, there is an “Undokai” or sports day.

最近は運動会の話題で持ちきり。

Students talk about it in our English lesson, they got tired from practicing but it was fun.
生徒さんたちは 運動会のことを話してくれました。練習でとても疲れているようだったけど、楽しそう♪

In the Philippines, people call it “sportsfest”.
フィリピンにも、「スポーツフェスト」というものがあります。

Fest is the short word for festival. It is celebrated in October.
「フェスト」はフェスティバルの略。１０月におこなわれます。
Schools in the Philippines celebrate this festival for about a month and there is a championship day.
フィリピンの学校ではフェストを一ヶ月間行うの。選手権もやります。
In sportsfest, students choose which sport they will play.
生徒たちはどのスポーツをやるか選ぶことができて、
They can play Badminton, Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Chess, and other traditional Filipino games like Sungka, Tiyakad, Piko, etc.
バドミントンや、バレー、バスケ、卓球、チェス、そのほかフィリピンの伝統的なゲームの「スンカ」や竹馬レース、「ピコ」と呼ばれるゲームなどがあるよ。

 

There is also a Cheering Squad Competition, it’s almost the same as Assembly exercise in Japan.
チアリーダー対決もあります。日本のでいう応援団みたいな感じかな。
In the Philippines, we use upbeat music and their dancing.
ダンスにアップテンポな音楽が使われていて
Elementary and highschool students practice really hard for this.
生徒たちは練習をすごく頑張ります。
They buy nice costumes for their team.
かわいいコスチュームも揃えてね♪

In the last day of the sportsfest, there will be an “Open Day” where everyone can come inside the school.
フェストの最後の日は、全員学校の中で活動する「オープンデイ」というものがあって、
There will be fun booths inside the school where people can buy fun stuff.
面白いものが買えるブースが学校内にできたりするの。
As a kid, I loved buying slimes!
こどものときは、スマイルを買うのが好きだったなあー♪
There will be a giant inflatable slide where kids can play.
子どもたちが楽しめちゃう、巨大なふわふわ滑り台も現れて、とっても楽しいです。

I think, Japan and Philippines have almost the same idea of sportsday, it is a nice connection in our culture.
日本とフィリピンの「スポーツの日」は共通するものがあるから、異文化交流としてとても良いものだなと思います。

It is good that kids learn how to work together as a team in a young age,
幼いときからみんなで協力して何かを成し遂げるって、ステキなこと。
I guess that is what sportsday is all about.
「スポーツの日」ってまさにそれですよね！
