Last year, some 5th and 6th grade students wrote letters to foreign students in Switzerland and Taiwan.
昨年、高学年の子たちがスイスと台湾にいる子たちに手紙をお送りしました。
In Feburary, we received their response letters with photos to give to our students.
そして2月に入ってから、写真とともにお返事をいただきました。
We gave their letters to them and we read the letters together.
5・6年生たちと一緒にお返事を読んだのだけれど、
Our students got excited to write back!
子どもたちはもうまたその返事を書くのに夢中！
They made new friends.
新しい友達ができたね！
They asked me how to say certain Japanese sentences into English.
They say, write, remember, and repeat.
This way of learning English is effective.
日本語から英語に直すときに
声に出して、書いて、リピートして覚える。
子どもたちに良い影響を及ぼしていると思います。
Students have different motivation to learn English.
生徒一人一人、英語に対するモチベーションは異なります。
It can be intrinsic or extrinsic motivation.
自発的だったり、他発的だったりします。
Extrinsic motivation is when the students learn English because their parents want them to learn or they are going to get prize for their achievements. Playing games using English is another way to motivate students extrinsically. This motivation is from outside of themselves.
他発的なモチベーションというのは、親が習わせたかったり、ご褒美がもらえたりすることでモチベーションを保ちます。
ゲームをしながらの英語学もその一つ。
これは外交的なものになります。
Intrinsic motivation is when students learn English because of their own will. With Letter Exchange Program, the students want to learn English because they can make friends using English. Even outside the lesson room, they will think about English as something they can use every day in the future.
自発的なモチベーションは、自らがやりたいという意思を持っている場合。
この文通プロジェクトで、子どもたちは英語を通じて新しい友だちを作ることができるとわかり、もっと英語を学びたくなったんじゃないかな。
教室以外のところでも、近い将来自分達が毎日使うものとして、英語のことを考えて行くと思います。
This is really good experience for students because the more English they know, the more things they can talk about with their foreign friends.

英語力が増えて、外国にいる友だちと話せる内容も増えて！
J-kun, Masumi, and I always make English learning fun for them. The next step is to be able to practice the English they know in the real world set-up. That is why this Letter Exchange Program is perfect for the kids. Their learning will not be for nothing.
JくんとMasumiと私は、英語を学ぶことが子どもたちにとって、楽しいものであるようにしたいと考えています。
つぎのステップは、子どもたちが自分が知っている英語を使って、実際に日常生活で活用できるように練習することかな。
I hope the young students (1st to 4th graders) will get to experience this letter exchange in the future, too!
