With March starting, I wanted to introduce a cultural holiday celebrated in many countries on March 17th— St. Patrick’s Day! This holiday honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Although it is closely tied to Ireland, many people in the United States, Canada, and other countries celebrate this day.
３月がスタートしたので、いろんな国で３月１７日にお祝いされている伝統的な祝日についてご紹介したいと思います。それは・・・セイント・パトリックデー！この祝日の主役はアイルランドの守護聖人、聖パトリック。アイルランドに関わりの強い祝日だけど、アメリカやカナダ、いろんな国でお祝いされています。
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many fun ways. One of the most well-known traditions is wearing green. The color green represents Ireland, and many believe it brings good luck. Some even say that you might get pinched if you don’t wear green on St. Patrick’s Day! In cities with large Irish populations, such as New York, Chicago, and Boston, big parades take over the streets, and famous places light up in green. Chicago even dyes its river bright green to celebrate!
聖パトリックデーは、楽しいお祝いの仕方がたくさんあります。一番よく知られている伝統的なやり方は、グリーンのものを身に着けること。グリーンはアイルランドを象徴する色で、幸運をもたらしてくれると信じられています。聖パトリックデーに緑の服を着ないと、悪いことが起きる、という人もいます！ ニューヨーク、シカゴ、ボストンのようなアイルランド人の人口が多い都市では、大きなパレードが通りを占拠し、有名な場所は緑色でライトアップされたりします。 シカゴなんかでは川を鮮やかなグリーンに染めちゃうんだよ！
People also celebrate by eating traditional Irish food such as Irish soda bread and shepherd’s pie. Corned beef and cabbage is another popular dish, especially in the United States. Many restaurants and pubs serve themed dishes and drinks, including green beer! Another fun tradition is watching Irish dance performances. (I used to do Irish dance! 🙂) In some schools, children celebrate by wearing green and making leprechaun traps, hoping to catch the mischievous little fairies from Irish folklore.
また、伝統的なアイルランド料理、たとえばソーダパンやシェパードパイなどを食べてお祝いします。 特にアメリカではコーンビーフ＆キャベツも、人気のある料理。 レストランやパブでは、グリーンビールを使った料理や飲み物が提供されたりします。
まだアイルランドのダンスパフォーマンスを見ることも楽しい伝統的なお祝いの仕方のひとつ(私もアイルランドのダンス踊ったよ🙂)。それに、アイルランドで言い伝えられている、いたずらっ子妖精レプレコーンを捕まえようと、緑の服を着てレプレコーントラップを作る学校もあるよ。
Leprechaun traps are small, crafty traps that children set up on the night before St. Patrick’s Day in an attempt to catch a leprechaun. According to Irish folklore, leprechauns are mischievous little fairies who hoard gold, and if you catch one, they must grant you three wishes or lead you to their treasure.
レプラコーントラップっていうのは、レプラコーンを捕まえようと聖パトリックの日の前夜に置く、こどもたちが作る簡単なトラップのこと。 アイルランドの伝説によると、レプラコーンはゴールドを集めるいたずらな妖精で、1匹捕まえると、3つの願いをかなえてくれるか、宝物のところまで連れて行ってくれるんだって。
The traps are usually made from household items like shoeboxes, paper towel rolls, construction paper, and glitter, and they often use gold coins (real or chocolate), rainbows, or other shiny objects as bait. The idea is that the leprechaun will be lured in by the gold but will somehow get trapped inside.
トラップはだいたい、靴の箱とかペーパータオルの芯、模造紙とかにグリッターをちりばめたりして家庭にあるものを使って作るんだけど、トラップとして金貨（本物やチョコレート）を置いたり、虹を作ったり(虹の終わりに宝があると言われているから)、その他光るものを使って作るよ。 そのアイディアはどうにかしてレプレコーンを中に閉じ込めたいという思いで作られたの。レプラコーンがゴールドに誘われて、中に入ってくれるだろうってね。
Of course, the traps are always “tripped” overnight, but the leprechaun escapes—sometimes leaving little footprints, green glitter, or a small treat behind as proof of their visit. It’s a fun St. Patrick’s Day tradition, similar to the Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus, that adds a bit of magic and excitement for kids.
罠は夜のうちにかかっているんだけど、レプラコーンは逃げ出していて、小さな足跡がついていたり、キラキラした緑色の粉が散らばっていたり、小さなごちそうを残したりしてレプラコーンが来たことが証拠として残されているの。 これは、歯の妖精のトゥースフェアリーやサンタクロースに似た楽しい聖パトリックの日の伝統で、子供たちにちょっとした魔法とワクワクを与えてくれます。
St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity to have fun, connect with others, and appreciate Irish culture. So, put on your green, enjoy the festivities, and may the luck of the Irish be with you!
